A thorough eye exam should always include a careful look at the retina, which is located at the back of the eye, to screen for abnormalities or disease. This sensitive tissue that makes up the retina and optic nerve is susceptible to a variety of diseases that can ultimately lead to partial loss of vision or even complete blindness. Early detection of any retinal abnormalities including diabetes or macular degeneration or optic nerve disease such as glaucoma is thus crucial. Previously, this screening was done by dilating the pupils, a procedure that many patients found uncomfortable, inconvenient and time-consuming.
The Optomap Retinal exam is simple: without dilating drops and with the push of a button, we can generate a digital image of your nearly your entire retina for immediate review. Experience with this technology has already led to improved disease detection and has possibly prevented vision loss and blindness in several patients.
Facilities and Equipment
Retinal Disease Detection with NO DILATING DROPS
Insight Your Vision Source is one of the first eye care practices in the Atlanta area to offer its patients the Optomap retinal exam (developed by Optos® North America). We are dedicated to offering our patients the best eye care possible, and acquiring the tools to help us do so. Optomap® retinal exam is becoming standard of care throughout the world.
The Optomap retinal exam takes a computer-generated image of virtually the entire retina, which can be immediately evaluated by the doctors. There is no pupil dilation, no eye drops, blurred vision or sensitivity to light. The Optomap retinal exam is a simple, quick and important way to maintain good eye health. The Optomap allows doctors to spend more time with patients, and provides a permanent photo-documentation that can be sent to a patient’s primary care physician or specialist if needed and can also be used to educate patients.
Today, we are diagnosing serious eye conditions – such as diabetic retinopathy, retinal detachments and macular degeneration – that could have otherwise gone undetected and often progress without symptoms.” Most patients who have a problem in their retina, can see and actually feel fine.
The Optomap Retinal Exam was developed as a patient-friendly examination tool by Douglas Anderson, founder and vice chairman, Optos, after his five year old son Leif lost the use of an eye when a retinal detachment was detected too late.
Treatment of Eye Diseases
Our office provides emergency services for eye infections and eye injuries. Please call our office at 404-250-1680 during office hours, after hours or on weekends. Our staff will work with you to schedule an appointment as soon as possible. State of the art microscopes allow us to examine the front surface of the eye and facial areas around the eye for infection or injury. After assessing the extent of the injury or infection a treatment plan will be formulated and explained to you. Treatment may include medications and supportive care. Follow-up visits to monitor your recovery will be scheduled as needed.
Dry Eyes: Symptoms include scratchy eyes, burning, mild redness and gritty feeling eyes. Oral medications, reading, computer tasks and dry environments may aggravate marginally dry eyes. Dry eyes can be diagnosed by using dyes to observe tear patterns, evaluation of the amount of tears on the front of the eye and from review of your symptoms. Treatment may include artificial tears; prescription eye drops; and/or punctal plugs inserted in the tear drainage canals (Please see diagram).
Allergies can be particularly annoying to contact lens wearers. In the past many people had to quit wearing their lenses for a month or two during the allergy season. New lens materials and allergy medications have made it possible for these people to eliminate itchy eyes. These medications such as once daily Pataday are amazingly effective and safe even in children as young as three.

Contact Lenses
The doctors and staff are experts in helping even the most challenging contact lens patients comfortably wear contact lenses. Patients are often referred to our office by other eye care providers to help restore vision after corneal surgery, after corneal trauma, or following the diagnosis of Keratoconus (irregular steepening of the corneal surface). We prescribe contact lenses that work best with patients needs and lifestyle.
Multifocal Contact Lenses
Our office is one of the first in the country to fit the Synergeyes Multifocal hybrid contact lens for people over 40 needing help seeing up close without compromising their distance vision. Synergeyes Multifocal lenses are different since they combine the comfort and stability of a soft contact lens with the crisp optics of a rigid lens. All types of distance prescriptions, including those for near-sightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism are provided crisp, clear vision for near and far.
Wave Contact Lenses
Wave contact lenses are designed like no other lens. A special camera called a corneal topographer creates a digital topographic map of the cornea. With Wave's special design software, we use the data from the map to create a custom lens that follows almost every tiny curve and shape on your cornea. In the width of a hair, there may be as many as 10 distinct curves on the back of the lens. With so many curves, Wave lenses offer unrivaled comfort and sharper optics. Many unsuccessful contact lens wearers are successful Wave lens users.
Contact Lenses that correct astigmatism
Patients with astigmatism usually have an irregularly shaped cornea, that is similar to the side of an American football. Just because you have astigmatism doesn’t mean you can’t be comfortable in contact lenses. Introducing AIR OPTIX™ for ASTIGMATISM -- a breathable contact lens that offers excellent comfort and crisp, clear, consistent vision to help satisfy the unmet vision and comfort needs of astigmatic patients.
Made of a revolutionary silicone hydrogel material, AIR OPTIX for ASTIGMATISM offers the highest oxygen transmissibility of any available soft toric lens, so eyes can stay whiter, healthy-looking and comfortable, no matter how long lenses are worn each day.
AIR OPTIX for ASTIGMATISM offers the breakthrough Precision 8|4™ design, which helps minimize the interaction between the lens and the lower lid for excellent comforti. The lenses also feature a patented surface treatment to help resist deposits, which can be a problem for some contact lens wearers, and are easy to handle.
No matter what your day holds, with AIR OPTIX for ASTIGMATISM, you can count on steady vision, high levels of comfort and benefits for the health of your eyes.
AIR OPTIX for ASTIGMATISM lenses are approved for daily wear and up to 6 nights of extended wear, and are recommended for monthly replacement.
However, many patients with astigmatism, wearing soft toric lenses experience changing or unstable vision due to the toric lens rotation, a common problem often associated with toric contact lenses used to help correct astigmatism. The variable vision can occur anytime and is often more noticeable in lower levels of illumination, such as driving at night.
The SynergEyes® A lens was designed to provide an astigmatic correction without the contact lens rotation. Patients with astigmatism can now enjoy clear vision from contact lenses without the worry of unpredictable toric lens rotation. The rigid center of the SynergEyes® A hybrid contact lens uses the natural tear layer behind the lens to correct corneal astigmatism providing crisp, reliable and stable vision, and delivering consistently clear vision – blink after blink.
Your eye care professional will be able to tell if the SynergEyes® A lens is the right lens for the correction of your astigmatism.
Corneal Refractive Therapy
Corneal Refractive Therapy (CRT) is a nighttime vision correction which uses a specially designed contact lens that gently and temporarily reshapes the cornea while you sleep. Dr. Sweeney is the first optometrist in Atlanta to have been certified (an FDA requirement) to fit Paragon CRT. Paragon CRT has been proven both safe and effective for patients of all ages and FDA approved for nighttime use. Simply wear Paragon CRT lenses while you sleep and take them out when you wake up. The result is no more torn lenses, no more broken frames, no discomfort from dry eyes and great vision 24 hours a day - without the lenses during waking hours and while they're in at night. And because you can stop the therapy at any time without permanent change to your eyes, you have ultimate control and flexibility in your vision correction.
Laser Vision Correction
Laser Vision Correction is one of the most exciting, innovative advances in eye care. It can also be one of the most confusing to the patient.
Changes are occurring at such a rapid pace, it is easy to understand why patients have a difficult time making this decision. Fees for this service vary dramatically as do levels of care.
Refractive surgery is not for everyone. People's eyes are different so even though you may have had a friend who has had LASIK, it may not be the best course of treatment for you. If you are interested in laser vision correction, we will be happy to guide you in picking the right surgeon, procedure and laser appropriate for you.
After the procedure, we take great care to monitor your eyes and adjust your medication for the best possible results.
PRIO Computer Vision Examinations
According to the American Optometric Association, 70 to 75 percent of computer workers experience eyestrain. There are over 60 million Americans with symptoms.
The symptoms include headaches, dry eyes, blurred distance vision, halos, double vision and generally irritated and fatigued eyes. Working at a computer requires a great deal of eye movement and eye focusing. The constant re-focusing effort stresses the eye muscles, leading to computer related vision problems. It can impact greatly on a person's comfort and productivity, whether they are at work, school or home. Computer Vision Syndrome is the term used for any eye or vision problems related to computer use.
We are happy to announce that we are now using a new device, the PRIO computer vision tester that will accurately determine a patient's eyeglass prescription when using a computer. The PRIO computer vision tester is an FDA Class One medical device and first and only instrument designed to measure the eye's reaction to computer image.
Thousands of patients, now wearing PRIO-prescribed computer eye wear, have been relieved of a problem that has grown more common than carpal tunnel syndrome. While these glasses can also be used for reading printed material at the computer, they are not recommended to be used while driving.
Prior to the exam, patients should measure the exact distance they sit from their computer screen-measuring the distance from the bridge of their nose to the computer screen-to fully duplicate the focusing demands.
Adjusting the computer workstation can help to prevent some computer-related repetitive stress injuries. Start by adjusting the room lighting or position of the computer to eliminate reflected glare off the monitor. Glare-free screens may also help. The distance between the monitor and the eyes should be between 18 and 26 inches. The monitor height should be just slightly below eye level, and the keyboard should be placed comfortably within reach. All of these factors can help improve posture, reducing the risk of repetitive stress injuries. Taking frequent breaks is also a very good idea so that the eyes are not staring at the screen distance for a long period of time.
Surgery Co-Management
The doctors at InSight Your Vision Source! are experienced in the co-management of eye surgery. They work closely with Atlanta's best eye surgeons to provide pre and post-operative care to their patients who need surgical intervention to restore vision from cataract or following refractive surgery such as Lasik.
Additionally, we work specialized eye surgeons to manage such conditions as retinal detachments, retinal tears, diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma and age related macular degeneration.
Eye Disease and Eye Injuries
Our office provides emergency services for eye diseases and eye injuries. Please call our office at 404-250-1680 during office hours or our emergency number; 404-207-2303 after hours or on weekends. Our staff will work with you to schedule an appointment as soon as possible.
Cataracts: The natural lens in the eye gradually becomes less clear as we get older. When opacities develop in the lens and the lens gets too hazy, vision will be impaired. Our office can diagnose and manage cataract care. When the cataract affects the vision to the extent that you cannot read or see distant objects comfortably, we will recommend cataract surgery. Our office co-manages with cataract specialists that are proven experts in cataract surgery. Cataract surgery can provide you with a bright new world of vision.
Glaucoma: Glaucoma gradually destroys the optic nerve tissue in the back of the eye. The greatest danger of glaucoma stems from the fact that the disease is painless and without obvious symptoms until significant damage has occurred. The most common cause is from pressure being too high inside the eye, but vascular disease and other diseases can also cause glaucoma. We always monitor for glaucoma during routine eye examinations. Tests include checking the pressure of the eye, screening for peripheral vision defects and analyzing the appearance of the optic nerve. If you are diagnosed with glaucoma, we typically prescribe medications that lower the eye pressure. Most forms of glaucoma are successfully treated with eye drops. Laser treatments and eye surgery are secondary treatments that offer alternative ways to treat more advanced glaucoma.
Diabetes: Diabetic patients should have a dilated retinal examination each year. Laser treatments have proven to slow the progression of retinal eye disease for many patients. Diabetes often stimulates the growth of new blood vessels in the back of the eye, which ultimately leak and damage the retina. If this condition is discovered early, laser treatment can destroy these vessels. We have the latest instruments used to detect changes in the back of the eye. If we discover advancing diabetic eye disease that can be treated or needs further evaluation, we will refer you for consultation and further testing to a board certified retinal specialist.
Low Vision Services
At InSight Your Vision Source, we are dedicated to helping our patients who suffer from low vision. Low vision is a visual condition that cannot be corrected by conventional eyewear or contact lenses. This condition is usually age-related and may be caused by a variety of hereditary or acquired disorders such as macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, cataracts and retinitis pigmentosa.
We maximize remaining vision potential to help persons independently and safely perform work, school and home activities. We evaluate the patient's condition, medical history, and personal needs. Then we help our patients by designing personalized treatment plans and provide specialized occupation therapy in office or at ones home to help the visually impaired overcome barriers that may restrict them from common, everyday activities like reading, writing, seeing signs and faces, playing cards and watching TV. People with low vision can continue living in their own homes and complete daily tasks such as showering, dressing, cooking, grocery shopping, managing finances, and getting around in the community.
We use special examination techniques combined with information from the patients family eye doctor to prescribe magnification devices. Then we provide training lessons to properly use and get the most from the devices. In addition, we educate persons about special adaptive techniques, special lighting and glare control filters to enhance contrast and comfort. Low vision aids don’t return vision to normal, but they can offer significant gains in what one sees.
We assist our patients by offering a variety of visual aids to meet their individual needs and improve our patients’ quality of life.
For near tasks, vision aids range from illuminated hand and stand magnifiers, high-power spectacles and user-friendly electronic devices. Eschenbach is the leader in quality low vision optical devices. With new high quality optical devices, our low patients are able to do the things they want to do again and improve their quality of life and independence.
For distance viewing, such as when driving, viewing signs while shopping in stores, in classrooms, at work, while traveling, reading menu boards at restaurants, or visiting museums, the best solution is either a hand held telescope or telescopes mounted in glasses. Activities at distances closer than 20 feet require a focusable telescope. As a result, a visually impaired driver might elect to obtain a focusable telescopic device, like those offered by Ocutech, for the other applications for which it can be useful.
If you have any questions on how we can help you or a family member that suffers from low vision, call our office today. Medical insurance and Medicare usually covers most of the fee for the visits. Make an appointment today to learn how vision rehabilitation can help you or a loved one regain independence and dignity.

Sports Vision
Vision Therapy has become increasingly popular among professional athletes to improve performance. Vision therapy improves vision by coordinating eye muscles, by straightening the alignment of the eyes, and by improving eye movement, coordination and focusing ability.
We provide effective vision therapy training which includes an at-home computer program for daily exercises.
Vision Therapy
Seeing clearly is not enough. For many people, reading and hand-eye coordination tasks can be very difficult. The act of sight not only includes ones eyes, but it also includes the neurological activity that processes the visual information. Throwing a ball or skiing down a hill, is a learned activity; to do either well takes practice. Those who do it best are those who started learning at the earliest age. Sight plays an important role in the learning of these activities.
